The term describes the manner in which our negative feelings are sometimes directed at people who resemble us, while we take pride from the ‘small differences’ that distinguish us from them.

I love this video.

jakehurwitz:

This video is hilarious. It was done by some of the guys over at vimeo on the other side of the office- specifically Casey Donahue and Blake Whitman. It reminds me a lot of the kind of absurd humor we usually enjoy putting into a Hardly Working.

I love it because these guys, despite working for a completely different website, are a lot like us at CH. At the end of the day, we’re all a bunch of immature 20 year olds with expensive video cameras. Break out performance by Sean Nelson.

And then, on top of that, Facebook is providing a highly viral distribution engine for applications that plug into its platform. As a user, you get notified when your friends start using an application; you can then start using that same application with one click. At which point, all of your friends become aware that you have started using that application, and the cycle continues. The result is that a successful application on Facebook can grow to a million users or more within a couple of weeks of creation.

“When you are sitting right on the edge of something daring and scary and creative and powerful and perhaps wonderful… and you blink and take a step back.

That’s the moment. The moment between you and remarkable. Most people blink. Most people get stuck.

All the hard work and preparation and daring and luck is nothing compared with the ability to not blink.”

In the last couple days before a race, I’ll supplement the usual high-carb fare (pasta, bagels, etc.) with licorice or jellybeans, since 100% of their calories are in the form of carbohydrates. During races, I consume the usual sports drinks and gels, but none of them stand out in my mind as being particularly tasty. Afterwards, if the weather is cold, hot soup and hot chocolate are both very satisfying. Otherwise, I usually crave fried or grilled meat and other fatty, salty stuff, like potato chips. Pringles deserve special mention because, the way they are stacked, you can eat six or eight of them at a time.
